Dry goods: Where is the motorcycle radiation caliper?

When looking at the configuration table, we often see the word "radial-mount caliper" in the brake system column. In fact, many small partners do not know what the caliper is. Why do high-end models have such calipers? What is the advantage? Today, let's talk about the brake system of the motorcycle from the caliper and the pump.

Modern motorcycles, especially large-displacement imported cars, have their brake forms already occupied by disc brakes. The advantages of the disc brakes are self-evident, but after years of development of the brake system technology is constantly innovating, because the properties of motorcycles, especially large-displacement motorcycles, have gradually passed from vehicles to toys, so people The requirements of the dynamic system are not just a matter of silence. In order to give the driver better control of the vehicle, the brake system suppliers have long turned their attention to the brake feel and control.

The Radial-mount caliper and the Radial master cylinder were created to give the driver a better sense of braking and lower the speed in a more confident manner.

Axial/traditional mounting calipers

In the 1990s, before the Radial-mount Caliper first appeared on a motorcycle, all motorcycles, including the calipers of the car, were mounted axially on the front fork, which was called Axial-mount. Caliper (axially mounted caliper). The caliper is fixed to the front fork by bolts from the side (parallel to the axle), and the bolts are located above the caliper (only one side is fixed). Therefore, the gap between the caliper and the brake disc varies in different areas.

In addition, the lever effect is more likely to occur between the brake pad and the brake disc during braking (ie, the braking force at one end of the brake pad is much larger than the other end). It may result in uneven distribution of braking force, which may not only cause excessive temperature of the brake pads and brakes, but may also affect the output of the braking force. Of course, this is only what can happen in extreme situations.

The Radial-mount caliper has been developed to solve these problems. The main difference between it and the Axial-mount caliper is that the bolts of the fixed caliper change from axial to radial, ie to the axle. At a 90 degree angle, the ends of the caliper are bolted.

Therefore, the gap between the caliper and the brake disc can be controlled to be smaller, and the position of the brake pad and the brake disc is also more stable. Therefore, in the extreme case, the driver can obtain a more linear brake feel and a more stable braking force. In addition, the radiation calipers make it easier to replace brake discs of different sizes.

The M50 is the top caliper currently available from Brembo for production cars. Where M stands for Monoblock (single); 50 stands for Brembo's 50-year history (at the time).

In summary, the Radial-mount caliper is indeed better than the Axial-mount caliper. but! For a knight without competitive needs, it should definitely not be the absolute standard when you choose a car.

Radial master cylinder

Axial master cylinder

Radial master cylinder, as its name suggests, is the upper pump design that pushes the upper piston directly to the pump piston. It features an upper pump piston that is perpendicular to the handlebar. While the Axial master cylinder is also directly driven by the brake lever, the pull force needs to be rotated about 90 degrees to push the upper pump piston parallel to the handlebar.

Although the effects of the two upper pumps are the same, since the direction of movement of the piston of the direct push pump coincides with the direction of the force acting on the tie rod, the direct push pump can generate a larger torque than the side push pump with the same pull force. In addition, on the side push pump, since the force acting on the pull rod does not vertically act on the direction of movement of the piston, the force will deviate from the direction of movement of the piston when it pushes the pump piston, resulting in the virtual position of the side push pump being greater than the direct push pump. . This will directly cause the brake feel to be less linear than the direct push pump. Of course, we must remind you that even if you modify the direct push pump with a larger piston diameter, it will not help you increase the braking force.

The brake system is clearly an indispensable part of the motorcycle, and its importance is no less than the engine. Because the greater the horsepower, the braking system with better braking performance is also required. And it's not just as simple as the pump down (caliper), the technical content of an excellent brake system is also very high.
